Speaker Bios

Banerji, Shantanu

Dr. Banerji is a Medical Oncologist at CancerCare Manitoba with a practice focused on lung cancer and sarcoma. He is also the Director of Precision Oncology and Advanced Therapeutics where he guides the strategy to implement companion diagnostics for cancer care. His laboratory at the Paul Albrechtsen Research Institute is focused on the application of Comprehensive Genomic Profiling to guide the cancer discovery and treatment.

Burnell, Margot

Dr. Margot Burnell is the President of the Canadian Medical Association and a medical oncologist from New Brunswick. Following an undergraduate education in biology and chemistry, Dr. Burnell completed her medical degree at Western University in 1980 and her internal medicine and medical oncology residency at the University of Toronto in 1985. She completed a fellowship year in oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, United Kingdom, in 1986 before joining the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Dr. Burnell has been honoured by the New Brunswick Medical Society with the Dr. Donald Morgan Service Award, by the Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellow Award and by the CMA with an Honorary Membership Award.

Courneya, Kerry

Kerry S. Courneya is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. His research program focuses on the role of exercise after a cancer diagnosis including how exercise might help cancer patients prepare for treatments, tolerate and respond to treatments, recover after treatments, and improve long-term cancer outcomes. He has published over 600 peer reviewed scientific papers including many influential randomized controlled trials in colon, breast, prostate, lymphoma, and testicular cancer patients. He is study co-chair for the CHALLENGE trial which is the first phase 3 trial demonstrating a cancer-related survival benefit from a structured exercise program. In 2023, Prof. Courneya was appointed an Officer in the Order of Canada for his scientific contributions to the field of exercise oncology. 

Dadwal, Shivani

Dr. Shivani Dadwal is a medical oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton with a cross appointment as an assistant professor at McMaster University. She did her undergraduate degree at Queen’s in Life Sciences before moving to Hamilton for medical school, and staying on for her internal medicine and medical oncology training. She completed two further years of subspecialty fellowship in GI cancers and also obtained a Masters in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University. She went on to work in Kingston as an academic oncologist before returning. Her areas of academic interest include EDI, understanding and addressing barriers to care, educational scholarship and programming, and wellness outreach within the medical system. Her disease sites include primarily the care of GI cancers, and newly sarcoma as well. 

Earle, Craig

Craig Earle, MD MSc FRCP(C), is Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, a medical oncologist at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, a health services researcher and Senior Scientist at ICES, and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Earle originally trained and practiced in Ottawa, after which he spent 10 years – 1998 to 2008 – in Boston at Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2008 to 2017 he was Director of Health Services Research and Head of Clinical Translation at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.

Gelmon, Karen

Dr. Gelmon is a Professor of Medicine at the UBC and a Medical Oncologist at the BCCA, who has combined clinical care with clinical and translational research.  She served as Chair of the UBC/BCC Research Ethics Board and is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. She has been academic Head of the UBC Division of Medical Oncology, Co Chair of the Breast Site Committee for the Canadian Clinical Trials Group (CCTG) and Chair of the Investigational New Drug Committee for CCTG as well as a member of the NCI Breast Steering Committee, the BIG (Breast International Group) Executive Board Group and the Scientific Advisory Council for Komen.  She was Co Chair of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) Scientific Advisory Board.  She is an active teacher interested in education of health care professionals and the public and has published extensively with over 400 peer reviewed publications.  She is active in her community including involved in end of life education and support and the recipient of a number of awards including the YWCA Woman of Distinction award. 

Laskin, Janessa

Dr. Janessa Laskin is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, associate member in Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, and has been an active member of the medical oncology staff at BC Cancer since 2003. Dr. Laskin’s clinical interests have primarily focused in lung cancers, in the last decade her research has evolved towards genomic and personalized medicine. Dr. Laskin is the co-founder and clinical leader of the Personalized OncoGenomics (POG) program, a translational research effort that uses in-depth genomic sequencing to guide chemotherapy decision-making in a clinically relevant time-frame.

Lewis, Melanie

Dr Lewis is entangled in the Canadian Physician and Learner Wellbeing Spaces:  Co-Chair of Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Wellbeing Committee, Executive Member of the Faculties of Medicine Okanagan Charter Group and AFMC Culture of Academic Medicine Initiative (CAMI).  Chair of the Royal College of Physician & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Steering Committee:  National Collaborative for Health Workforce Well-Being (supported by a 3.5 million dollar grant from Health Canada). Dr Lewis was a decanal leader for over a decade serving as the Associate Dean in the Office of Advocacy & Wellbeing supporting UG, PG and Graduate Learners, she is the past Chair of the AFMC Student Affairs Committee.

MacKenzie, Kristi

Kristi MacKenzie is the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies (CAPCA), where she works alongside national health leaders to collaboratively address key issues impacting cancer care delivery across Canada. She brings extensive experience from leadership roles at the provincial, regional, and local levels of the healthcare system.

Prior to joining CAPCA, Kristi served as the Regional Cancer Program Director for the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Regional Cancer Program and as Director of Hematology at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto and a Master of Health Administration from the University of British Columbia. Kristi is also a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders.

Throughout her career, Kristi has been recognized for her collaborative approach, strategic leadership, and ability to implement health system initiatives that enhance the quality and performance of care. She is a committed health promotion advocate with a strong passion for improving community health and advancing equitable access to care.

Maggi, Julie

Dr. Julie Maggi is the Director of Faculty Wellness in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Staff Psychiatrist at St. Michael’s Hospital providing consultation-liaison psychiatry services. She holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

She graduated medical school from McMaster University and completed her postgraduate medical training in Psychiatry and a Master of Science (Institute of Medical Science) at the University of Toronto. She also completed fellowships in HIV Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Administrative Psychiatry at Columbia University, and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Her previous roles included Director of Postgraduate Education (2011 – 2017), interim Psychiatrist-in-Chief (July 2016 – May 2017), and Director of Postgraduate Wellness, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto (2016 – 2017).

Manna, Mita

Dr. Mita Manna is a Medical Oncologist at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Associate Professor within the Department of Oncology, University of Saskatchewan. She is the Provincial Disease Site Lead for Breast Malignancies and Chair for the REAL Alliance Breast Cancer Canada (Research Excellence and Active Leadership). Her research interests include quality improvement and real-world evidence. She is the 2025 recipient of the College of Medicine Annual Excellence in Research Award at the University of Saskatchewan. She is also actively involved in medical education. When she is not at work, she can be found cycling and leading the Pedal Wench group at Bike Doctor.

Watson, Alexander

Dr Alexander (Alec) Watson works as a medical oncologist in Calgary, Alberta, focusing on Thoracic Oncology and clinical trials, having recently finished a two-year advanced fellowship in those areas at the University of Colorado, Denver. He obtained a DPhil in cancer biology and immunology at the University of Oxford, completed medical school at the University of British Columbia, and residency at the University of Calgary. His research centers around early phase clinical trials, investigating toxicities of novel therapeutic agents, and immune-mediators of therapeutic responses. Outside of work, he is a keen endurance athlete and outdoor enthusiast.
